Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening for Twin Pregnancies

Paternity test results

Nowadays the non-invasive prenatal test which uses cell-free fetal DNA found in a mother’s bloodstream has gained more interest than an invasive technique because non-invasive prenatal tests are considered safer than an invasive prenatal test.

How soon can you tell that you’re pregnant with twins?

The doctor won’t be able to tell whether you’re pregnant with twins or not until your first-trimester ultrasound, which is generally done between 6 and 9 weeks of the pregnancy but can be done by week 14.

Other than that you might also be able to tell that you are having twins if your blood test shows high human chorionic gonadotropin hormone levels.

Prenatal test

Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone is a pregnancy hormone that your body starts to make after the embryo implants itself in the uterus wall. This hormone increases every few weeks and starts doubling every 2-3 days for at least 10 weeks.

How do doctors confirm twin pregnancies?

The doctor may order an earlier ultrasound if your blood tests reveal the following results:

Elevated hCG levels: High levels of hCG than normal may be a sign that you are carrying more than 1 child.

High Alpha-fetoprotein: This is a protein released by the fetus and is found in the mother’s blood. High levels of this protein can indicate that more than one fetus is making the protein.
